Why is it only happening in Wakefield?
This new scheme will be trialled in Wakefield first, we hope to roll it out across West Yorkshire in 2027.
Is it only certain buses in Wakefield, if so, is there a list of services?
The free travel before 9:30 is for journeys which start in the Wakefield district.
You can still use your pass for off peak travel on other buses in West Yorkshire and throughout England.

Is it only on Arriva in Wakefield or other bus operators as well?

I don’t have a Wakefield postcode, can I travel before 9.30am?
Free travel for all West Yorkshire Disabled Person’s Pass holders is available before 9.30am weekdays for journeys starting in the Wakefield district
You can still use your pass for off peak travel on other buses in West Yorkshire and throughout England.

Can I travel into Leeds or other areas of West Yorkshire for free?
Yes, free travel for Disabled Person’s Pass holders is available before 9.30am weekdays for journeys starting in the Wakefield district.
Will travel be allowed on Wakefield services cross-boundary into Barnsley?
Yes – If you are boarding one of the services listed and travel into South Yorkshire your journey will be free.
South Yorkshire also have free travel at all times for holders of a Disabled Bus Pass.
What about if I travel to North Yorkshire?
If you are boarding one of the services listed and travel into North Yorkshire your journey will be free.
If you are in North Yorkshire your pass will entitle you to the concession in that area.
For North Yorkshire free travel is after 9am Monday to Friday and all day Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.
I live near the border of Wakefield, how do I know if my bus stop is Wakefield or if it’s in another district?
The scheme only covers journeys before 9.30am weekdays for journeys starting in the Wakefield district.

When will this go ahead?
The scheme will start on Tuesday 26 May 2026.
Does this only effect buses within Wakefield or does it include traveling ‘cross boundary’ also?
Bus Pass holders are entitled to that areas concessionary rules. So, for example if a customer boards one of the listed bus services in West Yorkshire the travel will be free.
If a customer boards a listed service in South Yorkshire, the travel will be free as they also operate free travel before 9.30am.
If a customer boards a listed service in North Yorkshire they will have to pay the full price until 9am as that is the concessionary scheme in North Yorkshire.
What if a driver refuses me travel can I claim compensation?
Keep your ticket and contact the operator to claim a refund, you can find a list of operators here.
Can I get a pass for my disabled child so they can get to school?
Yes, if your child meets the eligibility criteria, then you will be able to apply. See here for more detail information.
I currently have a Senior Bus Pass, but I also have a disability, can I apply for a Disabled Bus Pass instead?
Yes, if you meet the eligibility criteria, then you will be able to apply. See here for more information.
Does it include people who hold a Companion Pass? Can the companion also travel for free?
Yes as long as they are accompanying someone with a Companion Pass.
